House renovation can quickly become a stressful time with contradicting suggestions, an overwhelming amount of choice, rising costs and also rising funding cost. However, when planned out carefully, it can become a pleasant experience watching your house slowly get a new look. Here are some tips that will make your house renovation less of a hassle and more of enjoyable memories!
1. Crosscheck the contractor: Getting the right contractor will set the tone for how your entire experience goes, so make sure you find someone well recommended is essential.
If they have provided references, make full use of these, call them, and ask about the contractor. This doesn’t mean just his work skills but also how well he listens to the clients because you will be in constant contact with him.
A good builder will have no issue with letting you speak to customers and they should be able to supply good, verifiable references.
2. Plan Ahead: This rule works well in any area of life. Don’t wait for the contractor to give you options. Browse the internet and talk to friends because the last thing you want is to end up spending a lot of money because you keep changing your mind.
3. House Rules: During your home renovation, there will be a lot of strangers going in and out of your house who you can’t keep an eye on. If you have any rules such as not smoking in the house, no go zones, make it known well before the start.
4. Details Matter: Make sure that every detail of the entire home renovation is taken down in writing by your contractor before you start with the work or put in your money. There is nothing worse than going into this harrowing time and then finding out that one part of your idea isn’t jotted down in your contract, so you have to end up paying an additional amount for it.
5. Clean the Mess: It is extremely important that the renovation crew cleans up every single day regardless of whether they will come back and create another mess or not. In most cases, the renovation will create a huge amount of dust and if it is left untended to, it will enter your heating or cooling system. This can lead to any amount of health problems.
Choosing a builder for your project can be very time-consuming, but it’s time well-spent considering the amount of money involved.
There are other important factors you should take into account before making a decision:
a/ Price and Budget
There are specialist builders for first-home buyer residences, mid-range project homes, top-end custom designs, and for the very high budget there are luxury builders.
if you are building a top end custom home, there is little point approaching a first-home builder as their building method is repeat design and build business model will prevent them from being able to be competitive in a one-off build you are undertaking.
Similarly, a high-end luxury home builder just won’t want to build a small built for budget home where their margin is smaller than a more luxurious product. Similarly, if you are very eco-friendly and want a lot of sustainable features, look for a specialist builder who has extensive experience in that area.
b/ Financial stability
In today’s market, builders are cutting prices to keep their team employed. That looks good on paper, but cutting prices in a highly competitive market is not sustainable in the long term.
You may have got the best price in town, but if the builder is not around to complete the build for you, it will be a very hollow victory and end in tears!
A credit reference can be sourced from any number of online agencies. It’s not a guarantee to performance, but it’s one of the best sources of information about the financial strength of a company.
Pay particular care to check market sources if the company pays its suppliers on time and if they are respected in the industry.
c/ Personality and working relationships
Think about the relationship you want to have with the builder.
Some owners want to be on site regularly and want to build up a rapport with the supervisor in charge. Some larger builders change the site foreman regularly and clients can find that very frustrating.
If you want to be involved in the project, a smaller owner-builder will provide a more personal service. You may even be dealing with the owner of the company full time on the project and this can give you complete reassurance.
It’s vital to get the right builder for your project build who will deliver what you want, for the price you want, and with the level of personal service you expect.

Polished concrete is a hard wearing floor. It’s easy to maintain, easy to clean, and it’s stylish. That’s why so many interior designers, architects as well as home and business owners choose polished concrete flooring for their residential, commercial, or industrial projects.
It’s resistant to industrial chemicals, oils, food stains, greases, and fatty materials, so it’s very easy to clean. Thanks also to its reflective quality, it bounces light around a room, making the ambience appear lighter and brighter.
Specialist contractors mechanically grind the floor, polish and seal the concrete, or add a range of gloss finishes if that is desired. They can suggest the most cost-effective finish for the purpose of the project.
BENEFITS OF POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS
Our research found a large number of benefits of concrete floors including these:
By utilising the concrete floor slab as your finished floor, the environmental costs associated with the manufacture of other floor coverings, adhesives and all installation materials are eliminated. An eco-friendly solution that a lot of property owners are looking for to meet ‘green building’ ratings.
The random variety of stones in the polished concrete makes each floor unique and very low maintenance.
Polished floors are easy to clean and when finished look great. The floor’s sealer repels spillages & stains and easily cleaned up.
These floors do not harbour dust mites as carpet does, so a hypo-allergenic surface for home and business owners.
Polished concrete does not give off volatile organic compounds, (VOC’s) which can be found in composite timber flooring and coatings such as epoxies.
We all know that concrete floors are long lasting, durable and outlast any other flooring alternative.
There is a cost for polishing and sealing the floor, but over time it becomes more cost effective than vinyl, timber, carpet, and tiles which eventually will need replacing.

E-waste is any item with a plug, battery or power cord that’s no longer working or wanted. It covers a whole range of items from phones, computers and refrigerators to fluorescent light tubes.
Minimise your e-waste
In a time where electronic upgrades seem infinite and we’re constantly tempted to buy that new kitchen appliance or tech gadget, it’s important that we act as conscious consumers and consider the environment before purchasing new products.
Here are some tips to help minimise your e-waste.
Consider if you really need a new item
If you purchase a new product you don’t really need, or only require for a one-off job, there’s a good chance it’s going to sit at the back of a drawer or packed away in the shed once you’re finished.
Instead, see if you can borrow or rent one first. For instance, try searching online for ‘tool library near me’ for your next odd job around the house.
Consider buying second-hand
The idea of regularly upgrading devices has become all too common in our society. With new models being released regularly, we can feel compelled to purchase the latest version. But it’s worth checking the second-hand market or purchasing an item that’s pre-loved or refurbished before buying new.
Extend the life of your electronics
Try to get the most of your products by:
avoiding overcharging batteries
using protective covers on tablets and phones.
keeping them clean
Donate or sell working electronics
If your electronics are still in good working condition, consider donating or selling them to others who will find a use for them. This is one of the best ways to stop unwanted electrical items from entering the waste stream.
Many charity and op-shops accept certain electrical goods, but always check with the store first.
Repair it if it’s broken
Not all devices can be repaired, but it’s often cheaper to have a product fixed instead of replacing it with a new one. It’s certainly more sustainable!
Search the web for electrical appliance repairers near you, or try a repair café. Repair cafés are workshops where you’ll find tools and materials to help you repairs things, including electrical products. You’ll find expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields.
Be sure to check with the product’s manufacturer before completing any repairs or part replacements, as this may void the warranty.
Recycle e-waste
E-waste (electronic waste) is growing 3 times faster than any other waste stream. E-waste contains potentially hazardous and valuable materials, which don‘t belong in landfill.
To help protect our environment and recover more precious resources, the Victorian Government has banned all e-waste from landfill as of 1 July 2019. That means e-waste can’t go in any household bin.
E-waste drop-off points
E-waste should not be put in your rubbish or recycling bin. Take e-waste to a drop-off point in your state.
When there are no e-waste drop-off points near you
If there are currently no drop-off points near you, or you have a different electronic item to get rid of:
check your local council’s website for other disposal options in your area
pass it onto your friends, family or sell second hand, if it’s still working
have it collected from your home or business by Skip Bin Co.
The blogging team came across this really insightful blog article by Best Price Rubbish Removal on what trash can a rubbish removal company remove and they have agreed we could republish it here for our readers.
We hope you find it as insightful as must as we did!
Regardless of the type of household junk you have, we can remove just about anything. Here are some common types of rubbish we remove from houses in Melbourne:
White goods such as dryers, fridges, freezers, washing machines
Bedding and mattresses
Furniture
Appliances, electronics, computers and equipment
Scrap metal such as car parts
Carpet
House renovation waste
Green waste
Rubbish disposal is a necessary process that helps maintain clean and hygienic environments. However, there are several things that can derail a successful rubbish disposal process, leading to problems like overflowing bins, blocked drains, and health hazards. Here are some of the most common things that can derail the success of this process
Overloading Bins
Overloading bins is one of the biggest problems in the trash disposal process. When bins are overfilled, rubbish can spill out, attracting pests and causing unpleasant odors. To avoid overloading, we need to regularly dispose of rubbish in a timely manner and make sure that bins are not too full before they are collected.
Improper Disposal of Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste, such as chemicals, batteries, and electronic waste, can be dangerous if not disposed of properly. These items need to be disposed of separately from regular rubbish to ensure that they don’t pose a risk to human health or the environment.
Littering
Littering is another common problem that can disrupt the trash removal process. When people litter, rubbish accumulates in public spaces, causing blockages and unpleasant odors. It’s important to educate people about the importance of keeping public spaces clean and encourage them to dispose of their rubbish properly.
Unauthorized Dumping
Unauthorized dumping is another problem that can interfere with disposal success. This occurs when people illegally dump rubbish in public spaces, such as parks, sidewalks, or bodies of water. This not only creates unsightly messes but also can harm wildlife and the environment.
Lack of Recycling
Recycling is a crucial part of the rubbish disposal process as it helps to reduce waste and preserve natural resources. However, if people are not properly educated about the benefits of recycling, they may not take part in this important process. We need to encourage people to recycle and provide clear information about what can and cannot be recycled.
Inadequate Collection Schedules
Inadequate collection schedules can also derail the entire procedure. If collections are not frequent enough, rubbish can accumulate, leading to blockages and unpleasant odors. Because of that, having a regular collection schedule in place matters. We also need to make sure that rubbish is collected frequently enough to avoid these problems.
Poorly Maintained Rubbish Collection Vehicles
Poorly maintained rubbish collection vehicles can pose a problem not only for the collectors but also for the homeowners. If vehicles are not properly maintained, they may break down, causing delays in collections and leading to overflowing bins. This is why companies have to regularly maintain rubbish collection vehicles to ensure that they are in good working order.
Final Thoughts
The rubbish disposal process is an important part of maintaining clean and hygienic environments. As evident above, so many circumstances can derail the process and leave us with more trash to deal with than necessary. To ensure success in this feat, it’s important to address these issues and take steps to prevent them from happening. Most people in Australia know you can’t recycle a plastic shopping bag but what about a take away coffee lid or a bottle top. Ask most people and they will say they support a cleaner environment and most people say they will do whatever they can to manage waste to keep the world and waterways as clean as possible.
Australians buy 3.5 million tonnes of plastic each year. Only about 11% of it can actually be recycled. Much of it used to get sent to China for recycling, until the Chinese Government became stricter on what recycling they would accept. China has imposed some impossibly hard guidelines for allowing other countries waste into their country. The global market for recycling changed dramatically with these changes and countries around the world are rethinking what they do with recycling their rubbish. China’s war on waste has created a major upheaval around the world and countries are scrambling to come up with creative solutions to waste processing and recycling.
In Australia people continued to put their rubbish in their recycling bins, rubbish removal companies continued to show up day after day to pick up rubbish and recycling was still delivered to rubbish and recycling management plants around Australia. But Australia was left with a problem the size of a giant pile of rubbish. The great news is things are beginning to turn around. There is a new industry growing. We are taking our own waste and recycling it ourselves.
It’s been six years since China put a stop on allowing other countries rubbish into theirs. Here is a look at what Australia has done since then and if that shock to the waste processing system has actually helped us get our act together. First, let’s admit we have a problem and it’s not just in Australia. It’s a global problem. One of the biggest rubbish tips in the world is located in China. It was opened in 1994 and was meant to continue to operate until 2044 but it reached capacity 24 years earlier than predicted. One of the worlds largest rubbish tips is the size of 100 football fields and is 150 metres deep. By 2030 the World Economic Forum estimates China will create three times the household waste of the United States. China is generating so much waste themselves it’s no wonder they didn’t want anyone else’s.
Sending our waste to China was a convenient way to deal with the issue. It was out of sight and out of mind, as the saying goes. By the time the China ban kicked in we were using 3.4 million tonnes of plastics in Australia. Just 9.4 of that was recycled of that we still had more than half of it sent offshore. The problem was it wasn’t really our recycling it was our rubbish. The stuff we were sending was contaminated. Unwashed food containers, mixed materials. Without China we tried to send our waste elsewhere. Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, but that didn’t last long either. Not only did these countries stop taking our recycling, but they sent it back. A problem we had pushed offshore was all of a sudden back on our doorstep. Australia had been caught with no plan and an industry that is not coping.
In Australia, plastic became the must have material in the 1950’s. During the 1960’s plastic production increased by over 400%. By 1979 we were making more plastic than steel. In the 1980’s came the catch phrase ‘Do The Right Thing – Chuck It In The Bin’ and ads with this have been telling Australians to be mindful of our rubbish and waste ever since. Nevertheless, we have been generating more and more waste including a lot more plastic. In the 1980s we used more than 70 million tonnes of plastic, sadly that was nothing compared to the years that followed. Recycling has helped us deal with some of that plastic with Australians now recycling 31.7 mega tonnes of plastic, but we are still sending a lot of waste to land fill. The bottom line is that Australians are still creating a lot of waste.
So how far has Australia come since China announced it would no longer take our waste? In 2019, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the Government would be providing one billion dollars to help solve the problem of our waste. “We need to look at how we create waste, recycle waste and how we can turn our waste into products we can reuse” Prime Minster Morrison stated. “It’s our waste, it’s our responsibility, we have to deal with it”.
Since then, recycling plants around Australia have become central in dealing with our waste and the Australian national plastics plan was born. The Australian Government has pledged that 100% of Australian packaging will be recyclable or compostable or reusable by 2025. Australia has never seen such a commitment to managing waste like this before.
The plan includes phasing out single use plastics. South Australia has led the way phasing out those products early in 2021. Single use plastics are things like knives and forks, balloons, straws and plastic bags. Plastic plates and cotton buds are next. The stickers on fruit will also be going. Because the small sticker on fruit can’t be composted.
There is a lot to sort out and sorting out begins at the point of sale. In Australia, there are several types of recycling labels, and it is confusing for most people. Some labels mean the entire package can be recycled but for a lot of the packages our food and drinks come in it means only part of the package can be recycled and that’s where the confusion starts for most of us and it is why we throw things into the rubbish bin instead of trying to figure out what bits of the package can be recycled. Even worse, manufactures in Australia have been able to put a recycle logo on their plastic even if the plastic can’t be recycled!
Across the country we have such a diversity of waste management labels and systems that there is likely to be things that can’t be recycled. If you can figure out what the labels mean, figuring out what bin to put it in is the next hurtle. Depending on where you are in Australia, there are different bins for different things. Most have red for general landfill and yellow for recycling. But there are also green for organics being introduced in New South Wales and blue for paper. Victoria is adding a purple bin for glass.
It can all get very confusing and as part of the one billion dollars the Australian Government has allocated to aid recycling, a new app has been created where you can take a picture of your piece of rubbish, so you know where what recycling bin it goes in. In Australia, sorting out the real recycling from the rubbish at the waste management plants has been one of the biggest hurdles to overcome also. Sorting has been the biggest hurdle to overcome. Sorting improves the recycling process but there are lots of different types of plastics that need to be sorted and separated to make the recycling process viable. Mixed plastic passes through sorting machines and then reprocessed. Aluminium and paper products are also sorted.
Once the plastic is processed and the plastic cleaned, it is chipped and broken down into pellets so it can be reused. Large corporations are helping to make the change to recycling and reusing our waste in Australia. Kellogg’s (the maker of Pringles) are trialling a new chip tube. Tip Top have phased out the plastic clips on bread bags, they are being replaced by 100% recycled clips. Coca-Cola have committed to purchase 13 thousand tonnes of recycled plastic resins from Australia. It’s significant because it’s the first-time drink bottles will be made with 100% recycled marital. This is a really important step because the one thing we have never had in Australia is a commitment to use recycled materials once it comes out the other end of waste management plant.
Using the plastic that recycling creates, isn’t compulsory in Australia yet. Countries like France are putting taxes on virgin materials. If a company chooses to use material that hasn’t been recycled, they are taxed as a real incentive to change their ways.
The good news in Australia is there has been a massive shift since 2018 in addressing recycling and waste management has become an important issue.
Skip bins are great for all of your waste removal needs. Perfect for spring cleaning the house through to removing unwanted items from major renovation. The benefits of hiring a skip bin from a specialist skip bin company is that it is a quick and efficient method to remove rubbish as well as being cost effective.
Skip bin companies are aware of the Australian waste management laws and comply with all of them so you aren’t in personal danger or risking receiving a fine. Skip bin removalists are environmentally friendly because they recycle as much of your waste as possible. They have different sizes to suit all jobs so they are cost effective, save time & help ensure your safety.
The larger bins have a have a walk in access for a wheelbarrow. You can dispose of heavy mix industrial waste through to concrete tiles, bricks, and garden and green waste through to household rubbish in them. Do not overload your bins above the line. Firstly for health and safety reasons, because things could tip out when being driven away but also it’s hard to lift a heavy skip onto the truck. It’s important to be honest with the skip bin operator about what you plan on putting in the skip bin, and the size that you need, because they will then deliver the best bin suited for your needs.
Bin Delivery
Bin placement is important. The bin will get placed in a three metre wide driveway on firm ground. The bin gets placed behind the truck. If you are placing it out on the street or a nature strip make sure there is room for the truck to back back and place the bin on. You may need a council permit if it in on a nature strip. It is best to talk to your skip bin provider about the permit.
Where Does The Rubbish Go?
Most major skip bin operators have all the bins once collected go to a sorting or transfer station as it is also called. The transfer station takes the rubbish and sorts it and diverts as much as possible from going to the landfill. The rubbish gets sorted into various piles of things that can be recycled like concrete bricks, timber and even soil can be recycled. There is a financial incentive for the skip bin operator to recycle as much as possible, but that is also a moral incentive to recycle as much as possible that everyone is embracing more as each year passes.
Prohibited Items
Prohibited materials to be disposed in skip bins include asbestos and liquids. There is an extra charge for these as well as tyers, mattresses and gas bottles. Gas bottles can explode and skip bin removalists don’t want to see anybody getting injured from an exploding gas bottle.
Skip Bins Help Ensure safety
A skip bin company focuses on safety and reliability. This year’s Jimmy Watson winner is a sumptuous Tasmanian pinot noir to rival the great wines of Burgundy, writes Des Houghton.
Des Houghton Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor.
A red wine that won the most prestigious wine award in Australia was made from fruit from a vineyard that was nearly ripped out four years ago for a housing estate.
Lowestoft La Maison Pinot Noir 2022 from Tasmania last week won the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the best young red at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, the nation’s most important show.
Western Australia richlister Peter Fogarty saved the historic Lowestoft vineyard near Hobart when he purchased it in 2019 ahead of a group of property developers.
It was a sentimental purchase for Fogarty whose forebears arrived in Tasmania from Ireland in the mid-1800s.

The deal included stately Lowestoft homestead built between 1839 and 1850.
The property rests on the banks of the Derwent River and overlooks MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art.
The winning wine was made by Liam McElhinney, a Kiwi.
The 44-year-old from Marlborough in New Zealand is frequently in the winner’s circle for his pinot. He and his wife Gemma and two of their four children live in the historic homestead.
McElhinney thought he had made a good wine but confessed he was frequently plagued with self-doubts about whether or not he had done all he could to coax the best flavour from his fruit.
The judges certainly thought so.
As well as awarding the La Maison the “Jimmy” it was for the third year running named as the best pinto presented.

Lowestoft’s victory further enhances Tasmania’s reputation as a leading producer of pinot.
McElhinney said a cold and wet leadup to the growing season hampered flowering and reduced yields by at least a third. However, this may have had a beneficial effect with a cooler ripening period producing wine with intense fruit concentration, slightly higher acidity, and greater elegance and finesse.
His tasting notes describe the aromas as “intensely perfumed dark cherry, black tea, dried sage and amaro aromas”.
On the palate the wine shows “seductive red fruits” and “a line of graphite and bergamot tea, with lingering dried herbs, orange peel, and cherry fruit”.
“Tannin and oak spice linger on the palate,” he added.
As well as Lowestoft Wines the Fogarty Wine Group has boutique wineries scattered around the country including Deep Woods Estate in the Margaret River, Dalwhinnie Wines in Victoria’s Pyrenees and Lake’s Folly in the NSW Hunter Valley.
Australia has reached a deal that could pave the way for wine tariffs to be scrapped. “Everyone eventually realises they need more Australian wine,” Brokenwood senior winemaker Stuart Hordern said about the announcement. “Losing a market as…
Julian Langworthy, the winemaking supremo for the Fogarty Wine Group praised McElhinney and said his wine was paradoxically juicy and fresh despite its dense colour, structure and intense flavour.
He likened it to the wine to those made in Burgundy, perhaps from the fabled commune Gevrey-Chambertin where archaeological digs have been able to find Gallo-Roman vines dating back to the 1st Century BC.
Pinot has only won the Jimmy twice before; the first time by Yabby Lake Winery in 2013 and then Home Hill Winery in 2015.
The Melbourne wine show had 13 entries when it was established in 1884.
This year there were 2,425 entries from more than 420 wineries across the country. Melanie Chester, the chair of judges, said her team of 35 judges had to taste 100 wines a day over five days.
They awarded 1197 medals, including 180 Gold, 296 Silver and 721 Bronze.
